I heard from other students that it was eye opening to hear from students, faculty, and invited
speakers, and that these series were a look into people’s life from a perspective other than
academics.
Initiatives
MAPP (Mentoring Assistance Peer Program)
For over 20 years, the Mentoring Assistance Peer
Program (MAPP) has been a premier first-year
mentoring program that has served thousands of
underrepresented first-year students through 1-on-1
advisement, academic advisement, career development, cultural exploration, and community
engagement. MAPP represents a broad cross-section of the underrepresented student population at
JHU. Students of Color, 1st generation college students, and those with limited income background
mentor and support one another through first-hand interactions. Each first-year mentee is paired an
upperclassman who is dedicated to providing continual support and programmatic opportunities.
This year, MAPP was comprised of 87 mentees, 44 mentors, six leadership members, and one OMA
advisor. In addition to ongoing 1:1 connection between mentors and mentees, the 137 students met
together monthly over dinner and community building and/or professional development opportunities.
Among them included Resume Building with the Career Center, Mental Health 101 with Counseling
Center, Love Languages with Identity workshop, DIY De-stressors, on and off-campus housing
selection, and more. MAPP also convened over 30 programs, including Welcome BBQ, Halloween
Costume Party, movie nights, study sessions, adventures around Baltimore, trip to the African
