#RemarkablePeopleofColor
OMA showcased different renowned people of color throughout the semester as a way to celebrate the
legacies of communities of color. Those in history, the media, arts, sports, and politics like Audre
Lorde, Misty Copeland, and Yuri Kochiyama were highlighted through monthly flyer campaigns so
that students would become familiar with their work and impact.
Diversity Education
Be appropriate, Don’t appropriate
This collaboration between the Office of Residential Life and OMA has been a longstanding
presentation that addresses the issues of cultural appropriation during the holiday seasons (ex:
Halloween, Cinco de Mayo, etc.). This program was also sponsored by the Students Educating and
Empowering for Diversity (SEED) and they co-facilitated the discussion portions of the presentation.
The target audience for this program was specifically the members of fraternity and sorority life and
the residential community. Approximately 75 students participated and engaged in thoughtful dialogue
around community responsibility, historical context, and the importance of cultural sensitivity around
marginalized communities.
Discovery Days
SEED provided an identity presentation to potential URM students, that sought to discuss
intersectionality utilizing today’s headline news. They discussed Trans-rights, gender violence, race-
themed appropriations/parties, and more. This interactive presentation was popular with the potential
in-coming First Year students and was an elevation of our traditional identity program from year’s
past.
Unconscious Bias Training/Presentation
SEED conducted an unconscious bias training for a JHU sorority that had been experiencing identity
concerns within the organization and requested a 2-hour training with the executive board. The sorority
completed a pre-test/post-test analysis and Harvard’s implicit bias tests.
