The judges had paper to write scores, but they also had microphones to talk into to give direct feedback from the performance that were sent with the director to listen to. After the performances, a judge would come up and help with things that could make the performance better. The scores for choir were 29, 29, and 31. The band received a 27, 31, and 32. Both of these were out of 35.

Reading Olympics

By Jamie Kellen

On March 27, Burke Elementary School hosted our area Reading Olympics. Schools from the area that participated in the competition this year were Winner, Colome, Gregory, Burke, and South Central. There were a total of 30 teams, grades 2nd-7th, participating in the event. Reading Olympics is an area wide literacy competition in which each grade level is given their own unique list of 10 books to read. This year the books were chosen during a collaboration of the participating schools, and are meant to cover a wide variety of topics and genre, in an age appropriate way, using literature. The students are expected to read as many of the 10 books in their grade level as possible during a certain time period, and then come together in teams of four, with each team collaboratively having read all of the books. The teams then compete against each other to answer questions about the books, the team from each grade level with the most correct answers wins the competition, then all of the points are combined, for each town, to determine who wins the overall traveling trophy. This year, Winner was the recipient of the traveling trophy, breaking Burke’s 6 year winning streak. Watch out next year Winner, we want it back!

Team results are as follows:

2nd grade – 1st place Gregory 2nd place Colome 3rd place Winner II

3rd grade – 1st place Colome 2nd Gregory 3rd place-Burke 1

4th grade – 1st 2nd place Winner II 3rd place Colome

5th grade – 1st place Winner 1 2nd place South Central 3rd place Colome

6th grade – 1st place Winner 2nd place Burke

7th grade – 1st place Colome 2nd place Burke 3rd place Winner

Along with sending these fantastic teams to compete with our school, each school also sent a team of volunteers to help out with the event. Those volunteers worked with the entire staff of the Burke Elementary School, who also came in that day, parent volunteers who worked with the students, and parents at home who encouraged their children to not only read, but to come in on their day off! Working together made the event a success. I want to personally thank all of the volunteers and the students for their hard work and great sportsmanship.
