This one-day workshop explores the possibilities of iPhonography . The iPhone has become one of the most ubiquitous , innovative and playful photographic tools in our daily experience , but this powerful device is capable of so much more . With the ever-widening array of creative applications and an emerging practice of photographic interventions , the iPhone has also become a uniquely powerful and selfcontained editing tool . We explore how to make the most of your camera ’ s settings and introduce emerging applications to render the full and breathtaking potential of our images .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use iPhones and select camera apps to capture , edit and catalog images .

CONCEPT : This workshop explores the beauty of working with wax to inherently allow the artist to build up luminous layers while incorporating photographic imagery , found objects , paint and transfer processes . Students experiment with different ways to create imagery using the computer and scanner by outputting onto a variety of surfaces using archival printer paper , Japanese rice paper , tissue paper and image transfer papers . We then use the imagery in the encaustic studio as we layer , scrape , mask , stamp , paint , transfer and collage using encaustic painting techniques .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use simple Adobe Photoshop tools to alter and adjust photographic imagery for best use when incorporating with encaustic . The encaustic techniques we cover include choosing a substrate , encaustic gesso / grounds , gluing papers and prints , making encaustic medium , mixing encaustic paint and fusing . Additional topics include wax application , emphasizing texture , pouring , scraping and creating image transfers .
ACTIVITIES : We begin with technical demonstrations illustrated with visual examples from contemporary art . Mini assignments are given the first few days to encourage experimentation with plenty of studio time for personal exploration . As the week progresses , students discover the limitless possibilities that working with wax has to offer while building upon your own visual vocabulary .
FACULTY : Mia Semingson received her M . F . A . from the University of Colorado , Boulder and subsequently taught photography in the Department of Art and Art History there for 11 years . She owns Two Hands Paperie where she teaches workshops in book and paper arts , encaustic and mixed media . She exhibits her work nationally and internationally .

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use digital photography , digital workflow and digital printmaking with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop .
ACTIVITIES : We learn from slide presentations , individual and group discussions and field trips . Each student works on an individual project , either an ongo ing body of work or discovering new pathways . We review student works-in-progress as well as critique new work created from individual assignments . We discuss project ideas and execution , obstacles and how to overcome them , and look at related contemporary and historical projects .
