Lent and Easter Highlights at Fairview

For years, Fairview Chapel has been a place many people have visited during the Advent and Christmas season while others have sought it out during the Easter and Lent season. The simplicity of the decorations during this season of the year is a stark contrast to the Victorian decorations of the Christmas season. A large plain undecorated cross awaits Christ while the stone walls of the chapel itself are reminiscent of the tomb in which He will lay.
Fairview Chapel itself is even a symbol of the season. Born in 1840’ s it grew, served and taught people the word of God in its early years. Then its doors closed in the early 1930’ s; some might even say that it died.

For years it lay in its own“ tomb” as its walls crumbled and fell into disrepair. But then in the early 1980’ s, its resurrection began as local families began rebuilding it. Now its rebirth continues as people gather there on Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM to hear the word of God and music of the church as it is presented by visiting pastors and musicians who represent many different denominations.
During Eastertide this year, the trustees and worship team of Fairview Chapel invite the public to join them for the special services which have been planned.
To begin the Lenten season, a“ French Taize Candlelight” worship service led by Rev. Sally Joyner-Giffin from Harriet Chapel Episcopal Parish will be held on Sunday, March 5th at 7 PM. This unique service from the small town of Taize, France features hundreds of lit candles adorning the window ledges, tabletops, and the altar in addition to Fairview’ s regular candles and oil lamps.
The service focuses on light and the light of the world – Jesus Christ. For hundreds of years this worship service featuring poetry, scripture, prayer, and music has inspired worshippers. Music plays an important role in the service as Taize songs are sung by the congregation to the sweet sounds of the guitar.
As the chapel is filled with candles, we are also hoping to fill the chapel with worshippers for the start of Lent. This unique experience is one you won’ t want to miss!
“ In Praise of the Christ of Calvary” will be the theme of the second Sunday of the Lenten season. Rev. Ross Jackson from the Westphals Christian Community Church will lead the March 12th service. Special Lenten vignettes in song will be presented by the praise team from his church. This service of word and praise will continue our journey with Christ to His destiny and our salvation – the cross on Calvary’ s hill.
Rev. Gary White who is chaplain of the New Market Fire Department will lead the worship experience on March 19th. The old stone chapel will be filled with the message in word and song on the topic“ Were You There?”. The speaker and a music team from the Frederick Church of the Brethren have guided services in the past at Fairview and have inspired those in attendance with their creative approach to worship.
A service of adoration and commitment on the evening of March 26th will be guided by the Rev. Steve Larsen who is the pastor of Calvary United Methodist Church in Frederick. Musical moments will be presented by a dynamic music group from Calvary church.
