YANG LIPING Chief Choreographer / Director
Yang Liping is a Bai ethnic person from Dali , Yunnan Province . Yang is a National First-class dancer and the vice chairman of China Dancers Association .
A lover of dance from early childhood , Yang never underwent formal dance training , but with astonishing natural talent quickly became a unique and distinguished dancer in China . Yang won nationwide fame for the performance of an original dance piece Spirit of the Peacock in 1986 , which is elegant and dreamlike .
Yang is the director , choreographer and lead dancer in the famous dance drama Dynamic Yunnan , Tibetan Mystery , Echoes of Shangri-La , The Peacock and The Peacock — Winter .
As a household known name in China , Yang ’ s performances have won a large number of awards : the gold award for 20th Century Chinese Classics of Dance — the highest honours at the Osaka International Exchange Centre , best dance poetry , best female lead , best choreography , best costume design and outstanding performance awards at the 4th China “ Lotus Awards ”. In 2011 Yang appeared as one of the Chinese Beauties in the China Image – People advertisement broadcast in Times Square , New York City . A versatile talent , Yang also wrote , directed and performed in the film Sunbird , which won the Grand Jury ’ s award at the Montreal International Film Festival .
TIM YIP Visual Director / Costume and Set Design
Tim Yip is a famous artist who works in the various fields of costume design , visual art , cinema set design and contemporary art creation . Obsessed with Chinese contemporary art , Tim won an Oscar for Best Art Direction and the British Film Academy award for Best Costume Design in 2001 for work on the film Crouching Tiger , Hidden Dragon . Tim was the first ethnic Chinese person to win either award . Tim ’ s concept of the “ New Orientialism ” aesthetic has helped the world understand the beauty of Eastern culture and art . In 2011 , Tim collaborated as visual art director with dance master Akram Khan and an international team to produce DESH ( 2012 Melbourne Festival ).
