“Partnering for Help and Hope” was the
theme for Awareness Day 2017, because
providers, families, educators, and
everyone involved in a child’s or youth’s
life can provide the best care by working
together. between their physical and emotional
health. On the other side of the country,
in the Bronx, New York, a ZERO TO THREE
program called HealthySteps takes care
of family needs—not just the child’s
needs—right in the pediatrician’s office.
Awareness Day 2017 showcased the
advantages of treating a child’s whole
health, understanding that an earache or
trouble sleeping could signal a mental or
physical problem—or a combination of
both. This approach is one that SAMHSA
is focusing on around the country. “When you look at it holistically,
you’re treating the child’s
mental, spiritual, and medical
[well-being]. You have to use
a combination of them all to
help the child heal from the
inside out.”
For example, the Lummi System of Care,
part of the Lummi Nation in Washington
state, uses a canoe journey to help youth
get in touch with the very real connection
