YOUTH LEADERS
●●
TERESSA UNALIIN BALDWIN Hope4Alaska , AK
“ I started a campaign to change the dialog around suicide in the state of Alaska . When I first came to different villages , the elders were kind of frightened about me talking about suicide . They thought if we talked about it , their children would commit suicide more , which is not really the case . If we talk about it and have an open dialog , you ’ re able to really understand both the physical and the mental needs of these children .”

JUAN VÉLEZ COURT Youth M . O . V . E ., PR
“ Whenever that youth or that child goes in there [ the pediatrician ], how can we make it the most comfortable place that can keep in mind their culture ? We don ’ t know where that child has been or about their community . How can we make it a forum where that child feels like it ’ s a part of their extended system , this is somebody who ’ s going to help me ?”
PRIMARY CARE PRACTITIONERS
●●
WANDA FILER , M . D . American Academy of Family Physicians , PA
“ Teamwork is so beneficial for patient care . Sometimes patients will tell different doctors different things . As a team , we can bring all of the gathered facts together so nothing is missed .”
●●
NERISSA BAUER , M . D . American Academy of Pediatrics , IN
“ Know who ’ s in your community . There is a limit to what I can do in that office for that family so it really helps to know who your partners are .”
●●
KIMBERLY ERLICH , P . N . P . National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners , CA
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROVIDERS
●●
LISA M . CULLINS , M . D . American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry , MD
“ Having co-located mental health professionals actually is the ideal situation where , for pediatric providers , right while they ’ re doing a well-child visit and something may come up clinically that pertains to a mental health issue , they ’ re able to just grab their mental health colleague and say , ‘ Hey , let me curbside you quickly — I have this patient who is dealing with ADHD . I ’ ve already started this medication . Is it time for me to increase the dose ? Would it be helpful to have some parent training ?’ It ’ s so helpful to have all these disciplines in one place .”
●●
MAUREEN MONAGHAN , PH . D . Children ’ s National Medical Center Washington , DC
“ We really can ’ t separate physical health and mental health . We know that to feel your best physically , you need to feel your best emotionally and vice versa .”
●●
ADAIR PARR , M . D . American Psychiatric Association , VA
“ It ’ s really important to gather information from other people , whether it ’ s teachers or parents , to look at different settings and gather that information to put that all together .”
“ The more that youth are involved from the beginning in their care , the better off they ’ ll be .”
