Did You Know? Texas ranks number 1 in the nation for child pool drownings. Tarrant County is ranked second in the state. Locally, seventy-five percent of drownings and near-drowning incidents happen in pools, with children 4 years old or under. Active adult supervision and layers of protection, such as swim lessons and a fence around the pool itself, can lower the risk for your child. Facts About Kids and Drowning       800 children drown in the U.S. every year. Two thirds of the drownings occur during May — August. Under age 1 are more likely to drown at home. Ages 1 to 4 are more likely to drown in a pool. Ages 5 to 17 year olds are more likely to drown in natural water. More than half of all child drowning deaths are among children ages 0 to 4. Layers Protection Simple layers of protection do save lives and you never know which layer might save someone you love. The more layers you add the chance of an drowning is reduced. Please add these simple layers to protect your family. Wear life vests with Coast Guard approved labels. Take family CPR lessons. Use pool alarms.
