Burke High School Students Take Second Place Prize in 28th Annual Business Plan Competition

Pierre, SD – Michael Preslicka, Daniel Johnson, Thomas Heth and Kaleb Wells, students from Burke High School, received 2nd place in the recent 28th Annual Business Plan Competition for high school students. The competition is co-sponsored by the South Dakota Bankers Foundation and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. The concept behind the Business Plan Competition is to take an idea for a business that could be started by a student and transfer it into a business plan.

The finalists, parents, and advisors were invited to attend the South Dakota Bankers Association’s annual legislative reception on February 7 to receive awards from Lt. Governor Matt Michels in recognition of their entrepreneurial efforts. Michael Preslicka, Daniel Johnson, Thomas Heth and Kaleb Wells received 2nd place and $1,000 for their efforts.

Over 90 written business plans were submitted to the panel this past December. Michael, Daniel, Thomas, and Kaleb were notified in January that they made the top six and were invited to Pierre to present their plan. The boys had been creating and selling burnt flags for a project in Marketing class, in which they turned into their business plan. Their company, 'Merican Woodburning Company, produced over 25 flags during the first semester.
