RESPONDING TO COMMUNITY DIABETES NEEDS
In 2016, our Diabetes Institute received an Ohio University Innovation Strategy planning grant that funded a diabetes needs assessment for an eight-
county area in southeast Ohio and West Virginia where Type 2 diabetes rates are higher than the national average. Faculty presented results from the
assessment at a 2017 Diabetes Summit, planned in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control, Appalachian Regional Commission and the
Diabetes Institute. More than 160 participants shared insights into the impact of diabetes on this region, the influence Appalachian culture may have on
the disease and current best practices for diabetes care in both clinical and community settings. The needs assessment and summit outcomes are shaping
the strategic direction of the Diabetes Institute as well as diabetes prevention, education and health care initiatives in the region.
