IMPROVING VETERANS’ HEALTH
As a 25-year U.S. Army veteran, Todd Fredricks, D.O. (’93),
assistant professor of family medicine, understands the
health care challenges veterans face. But his previous
research uncovered that many civilian physicians don’t
fully understand the special medical needs of this patient
population. To address this, Fredricks partnered with Ohio
University Scripps College of Communication faculty member
Brian Plow to produce “The Veterans Project,” a documentary
featuring interviews with combat veterans around the
country, which will be used as a teaching tool for medical
students and other health care professionals who work with
veterans. Their research will examine students' reactions to
the video and accompanying materials.

DIABETES IN LATIN AMERICAN YOUTH
Complex global health issues are best addressed through collaborations
among institutions and across geographies and cultures. Faculty and students
from the Heritage College, the Ohio University College of Health Sciences
and Professions and the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador published a
study, “Cardiometabolic risk factors, metabolic syndrome and pre-diabetes in
adolescents in the sierra region of Ecuador.” The study is intended to determine risk
factors for Type 2 diabetes in adolescents in southern Ecuador – a topic on which
there’s been limited research – and to identify additional research that could lead
to effective strategies for combating diabetes among Latin American adolescents.
