A Week In Iquitos
IQUITOS
Hot, humid and stifling. These were the three words that were commonly heard by the missionaries of the 2016 Short Term Mission Team. When their flight from Lima landed in Iquitos and the cockpit door opened, a wave of heat engulfed the air and the missionaries could tell: This was going to be a challenge.
After the first day, the missionaries returned to their hotel drenched in sweat, exhausted and in dismay. The next six days were going to challenge the missionaries physically, mentally and spiritually.
But during the nightly reflection and prayer meetings, the missionaries prayed and placed their faith in God. He had brought them there for a reason and the missionaries knew they could rely on God to protect them. The next six days were filled with praise, dance, laughter and unforgettable memories that would forever remind the missionaries of God’ s power.
City of Iquitos
The main city of Iquitos is home to three churches that the mission team was scheduled to visit. Because of timing restrictions and scheduling, the mission team visited these churches in the late afternoon. While there were some initial concerns whether the children were willing to greet the team that late, those concerns quickly dispelled when the missionaries was welcomed with open arms by multitudes of children at each of the churches.
ABBA Iquitos
One afternoon, the mission team attended a meeting to discuss the start of ABBA Iquitos. Numerous pastors, youth leaders and ministry leaders gathered to learn about the youth-centered ministry and pray for God’ s direction. A few months later, they unanimously declared,“ We want ABBA!” Although the 2016 ABBA youth conferences have passed, they look forward to the start of ABBA Iquitos in 2017.
