WVUSD: 2016/2017 Year-End Results
• The California School Boards Association (CSBA) selected Evergreen Elementary School
to receive the prestigious 2016 Golden Bell Award. The Golden Bell recognizes innovative
and sustainable programs that are making a demonstrated difference to students. A total
of 56 public schools received the state’s leading educational honor. Evergreen became the
flagship school for the District’s STEAM vision with the innovative PLTW program.
• Walnut Valley Unified School District has been awarded the Best Co mmunities for Music
Education designation from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM)
Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. WVUSD joins 476 districts
across the country receiving this prestigious award in 2016.
• Eight WVUSD schools (Evergreen, Quail Summit, and Westhoff Elementary Schools;
Chaparral, South Pointe, and Suzanne Middle Schools, and Diamond Bar and Walnut High
Schools) have earned a place on the 2016 California Honor Roll for high-performing
schools.
• Thirty-seven Walnut High School seniors earned white lab coats and honor medallions after
completing the rigorous three-year IB Career-Related Programme/Project Lead the Way
(IBCOP-PLTW) Biomedical Sciences Program.
• Five Diamond Bar High School and Walnut High School seniors are among 497 students
in California chosen as 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program candidates. This honor,
established in 1964, recognizes the country’s most distinguished seniors for superior
academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, and
involvement in community and school activities.
• Diamond Bar High School’s competitive robotics team qualified for the FIRST Robotics
Competition (FRC) World Championships in Houston, Texas, held on April 19-22. Team
Sprocket 3473 was awarded the wildcard invitation during the OC regionals in March. Team
Sprocket ranked 9 th in the Newton Subdivision and then moved up to become one of the
alliance captains in the quarterfinals. Members competed against other top world
competitors from the U.S., Turkey, Australia, China, Taiwan, Israel Lebanon, Mexico,
Germany, and Switzerland.
• Diamond Bar and Walnut High Schools are once again among the highest achieving
schools in California. The latest “Top 100 Public Schools” report card compiled by Niche
is based on a rigorous analysis of academic and student life data from the U.S. Department
of Education along with test scores, college readiness, and reviews from students and
parents. Additionally, all nine elementary schools made the Top 100 listing for public
elementary schools in the state.
• Thirty-two Diamond Bar High School and Walnut High School seniors were named
semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program, representing the top 1% of
U.S. seniors in the state. These students have been recognized for demonstrating
exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
