Friday night practices were always well attended
and prospects were good for the season. With
the junior girls’ strutting their stuff in Turkey,
the rest of the team headed for the Istanbul of
the Manawatu, Palmerston North, for the NISS
champs. The boys’ put up a sterling performance,
destroying the other schools by a
mammoth 99 points to win the Top School Trophy.
Our junior boys relay team of Sam Miller,
Blake Campbell and Kaiyin Hardy tasted success,
narrowly winning. Dylan Kirk managed to get
himself on the podium twice, 3rd in both the
sprint and long in the senior boys’. The senior
boys’ relay came second while the intermediate
boys’ came 3rd.

There are three HBSS championships, the sprint, the long and the relay. The team had three winners in the
sprint, Hamish Legarth (intermediate), Jenna Tidswell (intermediate) and Olivia Wolland (junior). Next were
the long course champs in which the team produced two winners, Olivia Wolland again (junior) and Dylan Kirk
(senior). Finally it was the rain drenched relays. After being postponed because the Tukituki breached its banks,
threatening to flood the map, the event was relocated on to the school’s home territory on Tainui Reserve. The
school dominate the event by winning 4 of the 6 relays on offer. The senior boys’, intermediate girls’ and junior
girls’ teams all won their relays convincingly while the other winners were the intermediate boys’ team.
Finally, it was the big trip to Nelson and the NZSS champs. A team of 36 made the trip and it was enjoyed by all.
Somewhere in between the swim in the hot baths, the worst disco ever, the miserable weather for the relays with
appalling organisation, the roughest of ferry trips and arriving home around 2am, there was some decent
orienteering done. Kaiyin Hardy (junior) was the star at the sprint, winning the junior grade, while
Olivia Wolland (junior) was also on the podium, finishing second. Jenna Tidswell was the star in the long,
winning interediate, while Olivia had to make do with second again. Three teams made the podium in the relays,
all third, junior boys, junior girls’ and senior boys’. The boys team once again did themselves proud, just being
pipped for the Top School Trophy and coming runner up in the Premier School competition.
Jenna Tidswell was once again named in the NZSS orienteering team to take part in the Australian Champs in
Victoria.
