Senior A Netball This year the Havelock North High School Senior A netball team was again filled with many talented young players, meaning that a preseason boot camp would help see the young blood coming through. Boot camp was an intense, one-hour session taken by Abby Breakwell, which incorporated aerobics, strength and endurance exercises, which proved to have been highly effective after a few weeks! Going into grading we managed to win all our three games, which meant we qualified for the Secondary Schools Super 12 competition, playing at Pettigrew Green Arena on Tuesday nights throughout the season. As disappointing as it was, we did not manage to make the Top 6 in the competition. Unfortunately we were also unable to finish off enough games to secure us a posiNetball Senior A tion in the middle four, meaning that we would play off Back Row: Olivia Addis, Milly Douglas, Imke Kitchin, Ana Ramsay, Olivia Broadhurst, Amanda Onekawa (Manager) against three teams in the competition for the bowl. Row: Cheyenne Welsh, Georgia Rathbone, Reegan Brown (Captain) , We were able to finish off our Secondary School compe- Front Lauren Hartridge, Natalya Taylor tition with a win against Hukarere Girls College in the Absent: Kaylene Higgs (Coach) final, winning the bowl, which was a great result! The Lower North Island Netball competition was held again in Palmerston North this year. Because our two mid-court players, Cheyenne Welsh and Lauren Hartridge, were talented in football as well as netball, they were unable to play for us at Lower Norths. The team recruited two members from the Senior B netball team, to fill in these positions for tournament. Harriet Broadhurst who proved herself with her fitness and positive attitude during the preseason boot camp came away as a mid-courter, whilst Paris Mayberry coming with her consistent shooting throughout the season, adding height to our shooting circle. Our first three days of games proved to be difficult, as our position in A Grade was kept by the school’s 2015 team, ensured there would be tough oppositions to play. Although we didn’t get the result we desired, we managed to play well against the well-polished teams, as our pure focus was playing and concentrating on our own game and performance. We managed to finish off the week holding the school’s position in A grade, which was a result we as a team were after. A huge thank you needs to be given to our management team. Firstly our coach, Kaylene. The knowledge you have passed onto us girls has been priceless. Your high expectations kept the girls going through the season and we thank you so much for the time you have given up for our team. Amanda, Mrs Onekawa, our manager for the season. Your organization and motivating personality has truly helped us this season. You kept us all extremely well fed at tournament, which helped us perform at our best. A huge thank you to Bridget Broadhurst who came to tournament with us and helped make sure everything ran smoothly. Your scoring during the week and also throughout the season hasn’t gone unnoticed and we thank you greatly! Thanks also to Ange Rathbone for helping out as a bench official over the season. To the remaining girls for next year, I wish you all the best. You have all come so far since the beginning of the season and it has been great to watch. Train hard off season and next year, go for gold! Lastly to my three year 13 girls, it has been amazing playing with you all and I wish you all the best for the future wherever your paths may lead you. Reegan Brown.
