What is Baltimore Green Space?
Baltimore Green Space is a land trust that partners with communities to
preserve and support community gardens, pocket parks, and other
community managed open spaces.
Prior to my internship with Baltimore Green
Space, my knowledge of forest ecology and
environmental sustainability was limited. In fact, I
was unaware that Baltimore had forest patches
apart from city parks. Since then, I have had the
opportunity to work closely with community
gardeners and forestry experts to assess and
protect what Baltimore has to offer. By gardening
at the Duncan Street Miracle Garden, I witnessed
how a community garden can directly impact the
lives of surrounding residents. By working with
forest ecologists to survey forest patches around
Baltimore, I gained a stronger understanding of
the current condition of Baltimore's forests.
Working with Baltimore Green Space has given
me the opportunity to see Baltimore from a new
angle, through the lens of environmental
suitability, if you will. For these new perspectives,
I am forever grateful for the eight weeks I spent
in CIIP.
