feel homesick, instead I felt at home right from the start.
Nathan was very much into violin and acting. He was so enthusiastic about. His acting combined comedy, singing and little stunts that were embedded in the storyline of his play. Nathan always encouraged his siblings to join in. The living room became their stage and playground. Nancy looked up to her big brother and always mimicked him. They were rushing from one adventure into another and kept themselves occupied with drawing, dressing up and singing. It was nice seeing that the brothers and sister got along so well. Funnily, Nancy’s range of vocabulary use at the age of 2 was outstandingly good. At times Nathan and I had no more words left to compete.
I decided to become Au Pair at the Newham family because Leo has the Down’s syndrome. My mum assured me that there is no reason for being worried. Down’s syndrome kids are lovingly called children of the sun. They are characterized by their cheerful disposition and enjoyment of life as well as they are willing to learn and to be challenged. By the time I arrived in London, Leo was hardly able to speak and walk. We both put a lot of effort to develop his speaking skills and physical strength. Leo’s enthusiasm as well as joy in every challenging task was so inspiring. He never lost his good mood but he communicated in his very own special way when it was too much, he was exhausted or he wanted to finish. Step by step, through cycling, playing football, pushing his buggy or walking on one hand his legs and back muscles got stronger and stronger. By the beginning of New Year, he walked across the living room on his own. Soon the garden was not safe and everything within his reach. I am so proud of him. His speaking improved too. Instead of spitting out single words, he could formulate very small sentences.
My host parents were so grateful too. There are some cases where Au Pairs are not so lucky with their host families. However, there is no negative thing to say about Robert and Lucy. We could chat about everyday things, organized the weekly plan and we have been on holiday together. I definitely had the best host family and host parents I could have wished for!
