Elementary TK-5
Sequoia Elementary is a K-5 school of approximately 420
students located in the Dimond district of Oakland and
serves a diversity of ethnicities, income levels and languages.
Sequoia is fortunate to have a largely experienced teaching
staff, many of whom have been at the school for more
than 10 years. Many are master teachers who serve as
mentors for a new generation of educators. It is common
to find student teachers working with small groups as the
master teacher leads another activity. Sequoia is embraced
by the local community of long-term residents and small
businesses. It is a common sight in the first weeks of
school to observe neighbors stopping by to drop off office
supplies and children’s books. Local business people serve
as judges for our Oratorical Festival and attend and support
community events such as the Bike Safety Fair in the Fall
and the Walkathon in the Spring. Sequoia’s parent group
FOSS (Friends of Sequoia School) was started in 2006. They
raise money to provide enrichment classes such as art,
music, science and garden classes for all children. FOSS also
coordinates many events for the school community, from
the welcome back coffee on the first day of school to the
grade level potlucks in the fall and the art exhibit in the
winter. Another long-time group active at Sequoia is the
Sequoia Dad’s Club, established in the 1930’s. Dad’s club
members provide the muscle for installing planter benches,
shampooing classroom rugs, hosting Movie Nights for kids
and flipping pancakes at the combination Science Fair and
Pancake Breakfast.
