Elementary TK-5
Our emphasis is on the whole child, with excellent
academics, music, art, physical education, poetry, gardening,
field trips and community building. Emerson is one of six
schools Oakland pioneering Balanced Literacy, and the goal is
to get kids reading a ton. Large classroom libraries mean they
can pick books based on their interests. The children have
choral music and orchestra, art instruction and ceramics, a
fabulous library, and a full-time PE Coach. We have gardens,
an orchard, and several green play spaces, and are building
our garden program. We also offer an enriching afterschool
program including tutoring, homework assistance, science,
fine arts, as well as focused sports activities. We have
low student-teacher ratios, averaging 25 students in our
kindergarten through third grade classes. On our school
report card, 99 percent of our students report that they “feel
that classes are interesting and make them want to learn
more.” Our fabulous group of teachers are known for how
well they work together. They are constantly learning from
each other, sharing best practices, and looking for ways to
build community among the students of Emerson. With new
murals on the walls, halls filled with art, music on the stage,
and a vibrant, caring community, Emerson is a enriching
space for kids to grow.
