DUKE OF
EDINBURGH
The Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award welcomed a record 83
new year 10 students into the Bronze level of the award this
year. The students joined a programme in which over 150
Havelock North High School students are currently involved.
At the time of writing this the Bronze students had completed
one of the two overnight expeditions required for this section
of the award. The four groups left the school carpark with
raincoats at the ready and a less than perfect weather
forecast looming. Despite pushing a few members of each
group to their limit, everyone completed the expedition and
had a great time away.
The Silver group also completed their practice expedition
earlier in the year at Lake Waikaremoana. As is often the
case in the Urewera Ranges the weather proved challenging
and the group endured a few solid downpours during the
first two days. The final day offered sunshine to the trampers
and everyone made the most of the improved weather to
swim in the lake and dry out their damp clothing. This year
the Silver group will been travelling to the South Island in
December to complete the Queen Charlotte walkway as their
qualifying expedition.
