COMMITTEES Academic The HNHS Academic committee began the year on a high note, with an assembly celebrating the successes of our students in the November 2013 external examinations. We then took on the role of congratulating and mentoring the Year 9 scholarship winners, as we can all remember how overwhelmed we were when we first began high school. Later in the year, our focus turned to preparing senior students for up and coming benchmark and final examinations. We organised volunteer tutoring with committee members and other generous year 13s willing to give up their lunchtimes, and on behalf of all tutors we are so pleased with the hard work those being tutored have put in. At an assembly in term four we acknowledged all students who had gained a significant number of ‘excellence’ grades in internal assessment. Our congratulations goes to all students who have achieved results they can be proud of and best of luck for external results as they come out in January! These charities could be global, national or local and this year we have raised money for a range of charities. All of this money is raised through events such as mufti days. We began the year with the challenge to get students involved with “relay for life” which is an event held to raise money for the cancer society. Not only did we hold our first mufti day for the year for this event but we helped our head boy and girl organise students to be able to take part in relay for life. The event was held in Clive and even with the temperature dropping over night to very cold students found out that a BBQ could work brilliantly as a heater. This was a great event and one that I know we will support for years to come. Next was term 2 when Mrs Fitzsimons introduces the importance of supporting “Breast Cancer” awareness. As this was to be Mrs Fitzsimons last term with us we felt this was another great charities to support.
