NZSS Champs
Turkish Delight
The school orienteering team turn in an outstanding
performance when they attended the NZSS Orienteering
Championships held in Waiuku. The team returned home
with a total of four national titles out of the 18 on offer. With
over 400 entries from over 50 schools from up and down
New Zealand, the competition was very intense. The star
was Year 9 student, Jenna Tidswell, who returned home
with three of those titles, and in the process, proved that she
is the best Under 14 orienteer in the land. She won both the
individual sprint by 45 seconds in a field of 57 in the
parkland and schools within Mountford Park, Manurewa,
and the long in Waiuku Forest by one minute and 45
seconds. To top off her competition, she was part of the
junior girls’ team along with Aishlin McIntyre and Olivia
Wolland who won the relay. Despite the school’s
outstanding record over the years, which have had four
NZSS representatives within their ranks, Jenna is only
the second individual to have won a NZSS title. The fourth
title was the real icing on the cake. The senior boys’ relay
trophy being claimed for the first time by a HNHS team,
Jarrod Lobb, Laurence de Burgh, and Sean Morrison.
They won by four minutes over hot favourites Napier BHS
and a fast finishing Auckland Grammar. It was a great day
for the relay teams with both the intermediate boys’ team
(Nathan Miller, Callum Wilkie and Dylan Kirk) and junior
boys (Harrison Fulford, Kaiyin Hardy and Thomas Culham)
both ending up with bronze medals. Both teams produced
great last legs to improve their positions to make the podium . Other top 10 finishers in individual events were Aishlin
McIntyre (5th in both the junior sprint and long), Dylan Kirk
(5th in the sprint and 4th in the long in intermediate), Sean
Morrison and Jarrod Lobb (7th and 8th in the senior sprint).
The NZ orienteering Federation has invited Havelock North
High School’s junior girls’ team to be their representative
at the World Schools held in April in Antalya, Turkey. The
girls have decided to take up the invitation. They will have
the opportunity to rub shoulders with other school teams
from around the world. There performances this year were
such, that they were very much the favourites to win the
spot. Teams are made up of five runners with about 20
countries taking part.
