Term one 2014 saw 4 new players added to the team; incredibly the team struggled at times in their Saturday cricket to get 11 players on the field. Against the boys teams we had a 50-50 record, all the time seeing improvement each week as the team rebuilt. A one wicket win against Tawa in the inter-school fixture was hard fought. Caitlin 3/10, Erica 3/14 & Olivia Campbell 2/1 7 helped restrict Tawa to 82 all out. Caitlin (17), Monique (17), Olivia Addis (17no) & true grit from Grace Fulford & Jenna Tidswell in the tail saw us squeeze a win. The HBSS girls final was against Hastings GHS. HGHS made 70/6 in 20 overs. Olivia Campbell & Natalya both took 2 wickets each. In an impressive batting display HNHS won by 10 wickets winning in just the 10th over. Sophie Pyott (40no) & Monique (28no) punished the HGHS bowling for an effortless win. This made us HB champions for the 9th straight year. So off to Wanganui for the 4 team Central Districts finals- the top team to progress to the end of year 2014 Nationals. Expectations were high of a three-peat in 2014, but these were quickly extinguished as Wanganui HS batted first & made an impressive 135/9, with their opener & CD Hinds rep making 101no of that total. It was an impressive & totally dominant display from an impressive player. Losing 2 key wickets in the first over in reply effectively ruled out any chance of any comeback win & we eventually ended on 99/9. Caitlin (31) & Olivia Addis’ (18) partnership gave a glimmer of hope but sadly the tail did not wag. Our final game was against New Plymouth GHS. While spirits were low after missing out on the chance to qualify for the national finals we still got up to beat NPGHS by 7 wickets; chasing 106/6 (Caitlin & Natalya 2 wickets each, & 2 run outs), we made 107/3 in just 13 overs. Sophie (26), Monique 23, Caitlin 17no, & Olivia Addis 13 all got runs. So the 2013-14 season that began on a high, being crowned double national champs, ended on a low for the team that were desperate to do well for each other & maintain the tradition of qualifying for national finals. Still a great season for this talented & committed team.
