Havelock Singers Havelock Singers is Havelock North High Schools all comers mixed (boys and girls) choir and includes students of all singing abilities and ages. They meet every Tuesday lunchtime to sing together, led by the fantastic Mrs Melville and assisted by student leaders, Aimee Somerville and Tim Keip. The group performs at the Big Sing competition every year as well as at music fest. This year Havelock Singers was larger than it has been for a while, it’s encouraging to see so many students get involved in singing. The junior students from Havelock Singers are usually invited to sing Christmas carols to the old folks in late November/early December. Our conductor is Mr Cargill and our student leaders are Laurence de Burgh (year thirteen) and Morgan Watkins (year eleven). Junior Jazz Band practices every Wednesday morning at 7:45 am. We are a relatively new group; this is our third year running. Since the group was created in 2012, we have developed a great reputation. It is a fantastic group for musicians of all abilities. We welcome both experienced players and beginners. During our involvement with the band, we have really enjoyed seeing the ensemble grow and improve. We have had the pleasure of performing to an audience on several occasions over the last couple of years, opportunities which have been very beneficial in improving our skills. This year, we performed at the school Cultural Expo. We had a lot of fun playing to the primary and intermediate students who came to watch. We recently competed at the Lindisfarne Festival of Bands and earned a silver award for our combined performance with Stage Band. We also performed at the Napier Jazz Club’s schools night, the Spring Fair and Music Festival. This year, the introduction of schoology at HNHS has been a great tool for Junior Jazz Band to work with. Mr Cargill has been able to put video recordings of our pieces onto the group schoology page, enabling everyone to practice at home, playing along with the recording. Another positive change was the addition of Imogen Moore and Morgan Watkins trombonists to the band. In the past, the school has lacked trombone players but since Mr Cargill has been offering lessons, the instrument has become more popular. The trombones add a great sound to the band. Overall, this has been an amazing year for Junior Jazz Band. We have both really enjoyed our involvement with the band. We’d like to thank Mr Cargill for giving up his time to lead Junior Jazz Band. We look forward to seeing the band grow and improve over the next couple of years. Imogen Moore and Morgan Watkins
