MUSIC Colla Voce Colla Voce is Havelock North High School’s senior auditioned choir. It is made up of some of the more senior members of the choir programme at HNHS and all members are required to have vocal tuition. Colla Voce sings various SATB pieces sometimes in foreign languages, ranging from Beethoven and Bach, to Haydn and Gilbert & Sullivan, as well as more modern composers and settings of folksongs. Rehearsals are for two hours after school every Tuesday, with Friday morning sectionals to improve the group’s vocal abilities further. Occasionally they dabble in a few Cola Voce stage movements to add a new flavour to their Back Row: Whitley Mallory, Nicole Couchman, Jack Roberts, Lucy Bennett, Issie Mills performances. Our repertoire is largely varied, ranging from the vibrant compilation of tunes in ‘Instant Concert’ to the more traditional ‘River Dance’, to ‘Crystallize’, a dubstep piece by Lindsay Stirling. Concert Band rehearses every Monday lunchtime, putting in extra hours when needed, to enable us to reach a high standard. A highlight for the band was performing at the Fielding Festival of Bands in May, where our efforts earned us a Gold award, with accomplished Laurence de Burgh taking out ‘Best Soloist’ for his performance of ‘Oblivion’ on the oboe. With a new selection of music, we welcomed guest musicians and Colla Voce into the band to rehearse for the annual Hawkes Bay Festival of Bands. All members of the band, as well as our guests, put in a large amount of effort, and this led to us winning ‘Most Entertaining Band’ for the second year in a row. Once again, Laurence managed to win ‘Best Soloist’, this time for his saxophone solo, sharing this feat with the well-deserving Mr Cargill for his cornet solo. Overall, Concert Band has had a very successful year, and I would like to thank all members for the effort they have put in, Mr Cargill for his direction and encouragement, and Mr Stewart, for his support and leadership.
