Kapa Haka Te Kapahaka o Maungawharau started the year with an eye on the big event for the year, the Hawkes Bay Secondary Schools’ Kapahaka competitions held at the Napier Municipal Theatre. Our small group worked extremely hard and recieved huge support from whanau, staff and the wider community. As in the past Te Kura Kaupapa Maor o Ngati Kahungunu were exceptional. Many thanks again goes to Koka Atareta Savae and Matua Hunny Williams our tutors who were both instrumental in pulling together another exciting programme. “He taniwha hikuroa karua.” Thank you to our parent help, Lissa Pearce and Connie Collins. Chelsea Collins and Shavon Konia ex-pupils from last year were also keen about staying in touch plus they could keep an eye on their siblings Tynan and Donnielle. Many thanks. With ‘noho marae’ held at HNI and Mihiroa in Pakipaki, and many practises our kapahaka group presented a polished and exhuburant performance. While Te Ama was not placed she was ably supported by senior students from HNHS. At the end of term 3 Ngati Kahungunu hosted the national Nga Manu Karero at the Pettigrew Green Area. This was an excellent opportunity for local schools to hear outstanding English and Maori speeches from junior and senior pupils. Annually schools compete at regional competitions and winners are selected to represent their regions at national level. In 2015 Ngati Toa of Wellington will host the nationals.
