At the Smoke Free Rock Quest Regional Final Havelock
North High School made up four of the ten finalists. All
performed well and were certainly in the running for the top
prize. Super Cone Destroyer were awarded third place
overall and therefore just missed being considered for the
National Finals.
We again congratulate Eddie Roberts, Campbell Hay, Jake
O’Herliry, Sam Coulson and Tom Hosford on this
achievement The Easy Target band was awarded a regional
title for the Best Song. With over twenty original songs
written by the finalists this was a huge achievement
especially a band made up of all year 9 students.
Well done to Josh Every, Hugh McHendrey and
Arran Cargill-Brown.
For the third year running a Havelock North High School
choir was awarded the title of Best Choir in the Big Sing
regional competition. This time Future Prospect were the
lucky winners. Their energy, fun and vocal strength gave
this all boys choir the edge over forty east coast secondary school choirs. Future Prospect also won the award for
a performance of a European composition, another top award
for our school. Havelock Singers, our non-auditioned choir
with over 60 members, were the proud winners of a very
highly commended award for their performance of a New
Zealand Composition. This was an arrangement of our own
school song and featured year 13 student, Jenna Searle as
soloist. Future Prospect were delighted to then be invited
as a guest choir to The Big Sing Final which was held in
Dunedin.
In all, four choirs attended the Big Sing Regionals from
our school. We thank Mrs Susan Melville for the work
that she does in preparing these choirs.
Over 900 intermediate and primary school students
visited the school to experience the range of cultural
opportunities available to our stude nts. Our music,
drama, dance and Kapa Haka groups performed five
concerts over two days. It was so great to see all our
groups collaborating on stage, performing at such a high
standard and entertaining a young audience.
The Concert Band competed at the Lindisfarne Festival
of Bands on Sunday the 4th of August. This annual
event ran throughout the day, giving wind and brass
bands from all over the central north Island the chance
to demonstrate their ability and to entertain a large
audience. The concert band had been working
extremely hard in preparation for the event,
including a 4 hour rehearsal on the Saturday.
It proved to be a very busy weekend for many of the
band, being involved in the Talent Quest the previous
evening, a youth orchestra rehearsal on Saturday
morning and helping the Havelock North Intermediate
Band on Sunday for their performance at the Festival .
Well done for making this huge commitment to music at
Havelock North High School.
