Triple Peaks
After winning the schools’ trophy for the last couple of
years, we only had a team of juniors taking part this year.
Unfortunately the event was a few days before the ECSS
athletic champs, so all the runners were saving themselves
for that event. Ryan Calder took on the entire challenge
himself, finishing second in the U19 grade in a time of 6
hours and 24 minutes. Robbie Love also took part and his
time of over 11 hours was of an epic proportion. Josh and
Hope Every, along with Claudia Young were the junior relay
team.
Go For 12
A junior team bravely took on the NISS Go for 12
championship held in Hawkes Bay. A full-on twelve hours of
activities began at 5.30am. The team which accumulated
the most points at the end of the day would be the winner.
The HNHS team were enjoying the event so much, they
finished 70 minutes late. Unfortunately in adventure racing,
you lose points for every minute you are late. They had
totalled 3550 points of hard toil, but lost 2450 of them in
penalties! This meant they ended up in seventh place in the
junior section. The team was Josh and Hope Every, Angus
Southcombe and Caitlin Jones.
Get To Go
The prize of a trip to Great Barrier Island for the winner of
the regional Get to Go competition to compete in the
national finals was the carrot for the two Year 9 and 10
teams. The incentive was enough, so for the first time in five
years, the school team will represent the East Coast region
when they caused a shock upset by beating Taradale
High School. Taradale have a proud record in Get to Go
events and had some experienced campaigners in their
team. But HNHS rolled them in the orienteering and blitzed
everyone in the problem solving. This involved catapulting
an egg as far as possible without it breaking. The kayaking
and mountain biking exercises weren’t quite as successful,
but at the end of the day, they had acquired enough
points to win. The team was Lauren Hartridge, Hope Every,
Madison Chu, Annah McPherson, Angus Southcombe,
Dylan Kirk, Blake Williams and Ben McCallum.
The B team did well, finishing 5th. Their team was Lauren Bell,
Caitlin Jones, Georgia Rathbone, Harriet Broadhurst, Josh
Every, Mitchell Couchman, Jack Francois and Tom Fullarton.
