NON-STANFORD COMPETITION
•
Student-athletes may participate in amateur
competitions outside of Stanford competitions
during the official university vacation periods (winter
break, spring break, summer vacation period) only
if the student-athlete’s sport is out-of-season.
•
Student-athletes are allowed to compete in official
tryouts and competition involving national teams and
junior national teams sponsored by an appropriate
national governing body (e.g., US Olympic
Committee, etc.) even when classes are in session.
•
Please note: All student-athletes wishing to compete
in outside competition during the vacation period or
for a national team must seek prior approval from
the Compliance Services Office.

MEASURING A RECRUIT’S
HEIGHT & WEIGHT
DURING OFFICIAL OR UNOFFICIAL
VISITS WITHOUT A TEAM PHYSICIAN
Recently, the NCAA provided amended information about
sports programs measuring a visiting recruit’s height and
weight during official and unofficial visits. In the past, these
activities could only be conducted during a physical exam
by a team physician with no coaches present.
The NCAA has “concluded that height and weight can be
considered demographic information.” “[The NCAA determined] that this includes height and weight only, not other
physical traits” that can be measured or evaluated unless
by a team physician during a regular physical exam.

REMINDERS ABOUT YOUR INCOMING
NON-SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT-ATHLETES
Once all incoming student-athletes complete the
Stanford admissions’ May 1st online commitment process,
a list will be sent to athletics about a week afterward with
a list of names of those who have committed. Compliance
Services will review the list upon receving it and send the
applicable sports the names of those student-athletes who
have completed the commit card process. Once you receive
the names from Compliance Services the following will be
permissible:
•
•
•
•
Unlimited communication: phone calls and text
messages
Communicate publicly on social media
Unlimited contacts and evaluations
Media relations can post a press release on the
athletics website regarding incoming walk-ons
Please keep in mind that these exceptions are only for
recruits who have completed Stanford’s online commitment
process. For the applicable sports, all evaluations or
contacts at a high school still count as the once per week
visit. Further any evaluations of additional prospective
student-athletes would count toward the maximum. For
example, if a coach evaluates a “confirmed commit” playing
with his/her team, all other individuals on the team would be
charged with an evaluation counting toward the maximum.
Please see Jessica Everhart if you have any questions
about the commit card list or recruiting evals and contacts.
