Transportation, Distribution, & Logistics

Introduction to Energy

SWLi (1 semester, .5 credit, prerequisite Life Science, Earth Science & Pre-Algebra)

Introduction to Energy will explore the basic concepts of energy science, current energy issues, energy distribution systems, fossil fuels and alternative energy production, and the complex political issues surrounding energy. The course will explore in detail several cutting-edge energy technologies including low emission transportation fuels and technologies. Using media tools such as simulations, videos, and digital labs, students will explore how energy usage affects our daily lives and the future of our planet. Videos feature interviews with energy technology researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Transportation of the Future

SWLi (9 weeks, .25 credit, prerequisite Intro to Energy)

Awareness about the environmental impact of transportation has initiated a revolution in 21st-century vehicle design and technology. In this two-unit course, students will learn about the process of designing and building a vehicle and will examine vehicle engine systems in fossil fuel-operated vehicles. Students will also learn about emerging alternative technologies and materials in vehicle transportation, including hydrogen fuel cells, electric vehicle motors, solar-powered vehicles, bullet trains, Progressive watercraft and aircraft, and spacecraft. Using videos and hands-on labs, students will explore the impact of practical materials and applications on transportation. Videos for this course were developed in collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory. It is recommended that students registering for CES: Transportation of the Future successfully complete CES: Introduction to Engineering
