Music Appreciation (1 semester)
In tune with the needs of today's students, this comprehensive online elective takes students from hearing music to active listening as journey through the development and growth of classical music throughout history. Students will examine how music not only provides enjoyment, but affects and reflects the world around them. Throughout the course, student will learn effective techniques for listening and responding to music. They will also learn to identify common instruments, to define musical terms, to compare music from different historical periods, and to recognize the effects of music throughout the 20th century.
Music Theory (1 semester)
While core courses build a foundation for lifetime learning, offering electives such as Music Theory is a great way for schools to provide variety to their students as well as well-rounded education. This semester-long course answers the question, “Why study music?” with real answers. From rhythm and meter to making harmony and working with chords, this course lays the foundation for a lifetime love of learning. Fully interactive, it goes beyond the basics with audio and video elements that help to explain vague concepts and offer illustration.
Personal and Family Living (1 semester)
The transition to adulthood can be difficult. With Personal and Family Living, students get a look at the skills they will need to become independent, productive members of today’s global society. This interactive, web-based course helps students to identify the traits associated with maturity. They will examine the family, constructive conflict resolution, financial responsibility, maintenance of good health, nutrition, and employment. Because this course is fully online and customizable, it can be adapted to fit the learning styles of a diverse mix of students. While teaching a sense of responsibility, it also gives students practice in being accountable for their own learning and encourages critical thinking skills.
