Kiawah Island is unique among resort communities. In fact, that is what
drew most of us here. The special blend of nature and development continues to be
the number one reason people visit, buy and live on Kiawah. In 2012 we decided it
was appropriate to more clearly define how the Kiawah Conservancy fits into that mix
through a strategic planning process that helped us define who we are, what we are about
and what we hope to accomplish in the next number of years. During that process, we
received wide-ranging input from many people interested in the future of the Island.
The single most important thing to come out of that process was a definition of
who we are and what we are about, as put forth in our mission statement.
We provide the vision, leadership and resources necessary to preserve
and enhance Kiawah Island’s unique balance of nature and development.
We are an independent, research-driven, non-political, not-for-profit organization.
It is important to note, we are not trying to stop development. Rather, we
want to ensure the quality of life envisioned by the original developer in the 1970s
continues long into the future by balancing the interests of preserving natural habitat and
development. At the core, it is the natural habitat that attracted most of us to Kiawah and
distinguishes Kiawah from other seaside residential communities.
We are independent of, and not beholden to, any other organization. We are
research-driven, meaning there has to be a reason for what we do. We are non-political,
meaning we do not take political stands or interfere in local politics. We do cooperate
and work with other organizations that have a stake in the future of Kiawah when our
interests are aligned. We are the Island’s only not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization under
the Internal Revenue Code, which means your contributions of land and dollars are tax
deductible.
