Wide-Brimmed Hat

Hats are typically considered a cute
fashion accessory, but when worn on
the beach, they might just save your life.
Many beachgoers neglect to adequately
apply sunscreen to the face, neck, and
ears — and, as such, they are common
places for dangerous skin cancers to
develop. But wearing a hat can provide
an additional physical shield between
your skin and the sun. “Baseball hats
will not protect the back of your neck
and ears, so just be sure you bring a
wide-brimmed hat that will protect your
face, neck, and ears,” Chadha says.
Lip Balm
“When it comes to sun protection,
people tend to completely forget about
their lips,” says Dr. David Goldberg,
director of Skin Laser and Surgery
Specialists of NY/NJ in Hackensack.
Your typical lip balm isn’t going to be
enough to protect the delicate skin on
your lips from the sun. “Be sure to
apply a product that contains SPF,
and that protects against UV rays,”
he advises.

Sunglasses
Like hats, sunglasses can be a fashion
statement — but they do a whole lot
more than just keep the sun out of your
eyes. “You can find sunglasses that
block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB
rays, which can be damaging to the
eyes, not to mention that squinting can
cause wrinkles,” Bonney says.

Sun-Protective Clothing
Whether you’re addicted to standup
paddle-boarding or can’t get enough of
the ocean, anyone who spends extended
periods of time in direct sunlight might
want to consider packing sun-protective
clothing. “Sometimes sunscreen just
isn’t good enough, especially since it
does wash off in the water and after
sweating. But sun-protective clothing
can block out 98 percent of UVA/UVB
rays,” says Goldberg, who recommends
brands like Coolibar for everything from
swimwear and cover-ups to shirts and
pants that offer ultraviolet protection
factor (UPF) 50+ protection. B
