Finding your next adventure can be an adventure in itself . Some of the best trails and locations usually require the most research because they are so hidden and off the grid . The sense of accomplishment you get when finding that abandoned shack in the mountains of the desert or the crash site of an SR-71 Blackbird will be an experience that will stay with you forever to cherish and inspire the next generation of adventurers .
However , publicly sharing hidden locations and GPS coordinates has been a practice that has plagued the overlanding community in a way affecting us all . As much as we want to openly share information , we have to remember to do it responsibly . I have no problem sharing coordinates to that abandoned ghost town with a friend or fellow overlander , but it can be a problem when it ’ s in an open forum . In fact , I ’ d rather take you myself and show you in person than show you a pin on a map . It ’ s not because I don ’ t want you to go see it for yourself , but more about the fact that I am robbing you of the whole experience of figuring out how to get there .
Part of the overlanding experience of finding the road to nowhere is finding and figuring out how to get there in the first place . Too many times have people snatched up coordinates , plugged them into their GPS , and went without doing any research at all and sometimes not following the principles of Leave No Trace — which is another problem in and of itself . It ’ s up to us to preserve these amazing trails and hidden gems to make sure they ’ re around for future generations to experience .
In conclusion , the first thing to remember is to have fun ! If you ’ re planning to head into the backcountry , be sure to have paper maps with you for navigation in case your mini computers go offline . Finding new trails can be a little daunting , but I promise it ’ s worth the effort . I can only hope this will help you in finding your next adventure . Let ’ s Go Further Together !
