played a role in many government and city projects – including helping to build the new floating Fire Station 35 under the Bay Bridge .” However , he points out that it hasn ’ t always been smooth sailing and that his father showed a lot of grit and determination in keeping the company going through several recessions – especially when Hector ’ s dad and uncle retired and left him to run the entire company alone .
Nick also credits his mother , Dr . Deborah Colina , as a significant driver of the family ’ s success . “ She went back to medical school when my two siblings and I were growing up . This was great motivation for us – it taught us that if you have the drive , you can follow your dreams at any age . We were all very excited when Anco won a contract at the Chinese Hospital , where my mom works . I attribute much of my success to my mom .”
Anco almost shut down during the 2008 recession , but Hector found unexpected support from a prime contractor . “ At the time , I was doing some work for Carter Construction but finding additional projects was very challenging ,” he says , “ Construction was all I knew , so I felt that I somehow had to keep going . I mentioned to Carter that I was thinking of closing shop and they told me that they would help me stay in business – and they did , they gave me enough work to stay open .”
In 2009 , when Nick was still in college , Anco ’ s doors nearly closed again . “ I was working at Sam ’ s Anchor Café in Tiburon and going to school when my mother called and asked if I would give the company one last shot ,” says Nick . “ I decided that I would and my dad , my sisters and I fought to keep it going . I marched into City Hall and asked why we weren ’ t getting any work – they knew my
