1969 Voice Of The Tennessee Walking Horse 1969 March Voice RS | Page 17

North Carolina The breeding facet of the Walking Horse industry has begun to recog nize the increasing demand for qual ity horses. Records show that many of the top performance horses, in cluding the current World’s Champ ion GO BOY’S ROYAL HEIR and former champions such as HILL’S PERFECTION, MY FAIR WARN ING, DOUBLE DELIGHT 00, etc., are owned by North Carolinians. This fact, plus the number of new owners, new training facilities, and shows in the state that now offer a full complement of Walking Horse classes, are proof of the demand for quality — and quantity. Here is what two North Carolina breeders are doing to meet these demands: In High Point, Dr. James A. John son now has in operation a 125- acre breeding farm featuring the very best in facilities for his own and outside mares. The four-time champion, GO BOY’S INVASION, is king here and is a most welcomed and needed addition to the state. Dr. Johnson currently owns a care fully selected band of brood mares with proven show records and mares that have already thrown proven colts. Examples of his fine mares are the well-known SUN’S MIGHTY FINE and MERRY GO GIRL, dam of MERRY SOUVENIR. In Gastonia is another breeding operation where the former World’s Champion Pony, MIKE’S MIGHTY MAN, is standing. Co-owned by Dr. J. E. Reed and E. F. Gallagher, MIKE is also a great asset to our state. This young stud’s colts are be ginning to attract a great deal of attention. Two of his finest 1968 colts may be seen at GLL in Tennes see and an "exact replica” of MIKE is owned by Doris Keach in Ken tucky. Here in North Carolina, Dr. Reed has MIKE’s first stud colt, now a yearling, named MIKE’S MIGHTY March, 1969 ALPHA. The dam of this colt is also the dam of SUN’S CELEBRATION. GYPSY HEADLIGHT, successfully shown first by Winston Wiser and later shown in North Carolina by Dr. Hubert Poteat, is currently in foal to MIKE as is a top show prospect, SUN’S EBONY JEWEL. To increase his broodmare band, Dr. Reed recently purchased five mares from Kenneth Bell, Eagleville, Tennessee. All of these will be bred to MIKE. An additional bonus with this recent purchase was the twenty- six-year-old ROAN HALLIE, a fine mare that Dr. Reed is particularly excited about breeding to MIKE. Both Dr. Reed and Mr. Gallagher are anxiously awaiting the arrival of another potential champion this spring out of their MERRY BOY’S MAID and by Willis Fisher’s champ ion stud, MY MIDNIGHT MIKE. Both MIKE’S MIGHTY MAN and MIKE’S MIGHTY LADY who, inci dentally, will be shown in Three-Year- Old Classes by Pam Reed this year, are the finest examples of this great combination. MIKE’S MIGHTY MAN will con tinue to stand at Gastonia until the latter part of June, at which time he will resume his training with C. A. Bobo in Tennessee for competition in amateur events, including the Cele bration, with Pam riding. In keeping with the theme of this article is news about the All Breed North Carolina State Fair Horse Show to be held in October in Raleigh. Officials of the State Fair have recog nized the increasing popularity of Walking Horses and have included a two-night show exclusively for Walk ers with approximately twenty per formance classes and the state’s only Breeder’s Division for Walkers. In cluded in the latter will be classes for Weanlings, Yearlings, Model Mares and Model Studs with a Champion and Reserve Champion to be named for each. So interested are the offi cials in helping to further promote this breed that they are installing complete lighting facilities exclusive ly for this portion of the show and greatly enlarging their ring to accom modate the anticipated number of entries. James Rowland will be the judge. Mark October 24 and 25 as the time to place Walkers from all states before the people of North Carolina.
