JOHN T . CARTER STABLES
Occasionally we run across a ' diamond in the rough ’ and we certainly saw one when we recently visited the John T . Carter Stables in Kingsport , Tennessee . To say that his two-year-old SUN ’ S DELIGHT stud colt was " the best in the country ” would perhaps be a disservice to some other fine colts we have seen , but you can bet that he is " one of the best .” Named DE LIGHT ’ S ADONIS ( which means the finest in male perfection ), this black stud has everything . He was a late colt but is already fifteen-two and is still growing . " Beautiful ” adequately describes him and he has natural ability to match his looks . ADONIS is presently owned by Bob Piercy and H . B . Hauk of Kingsport . All or part of him has been swapped around considerably in recent months and to date he is valued at S25,000 . Some horse ! John and Mike Carter are working a barn full of fine horses . Among the young horses that are outstanding are a bay SUN ’ S DELIGHT stud colt owned
by Fray Escue and a black SPIRIT OF MIDNIGHT filly owned by Hauk and Waggoner . The bay stud is
doing very well and the filly , named SPIRIT ’ S JUNE BRIDE , is making good progress . John T . owns a fine
black MIDNIGHT BEAU stud colt that is looking for a new owner . He should make the grade also . Jimmy
Frazier and Bob Piercy have a fancy sorrel gelding with a flax mane and tail that is going to be a real
threat in two-year-old gelding classes . He is by SUN ’ S DELIGHT and can really march on for a young horse .
JANE ’ S DELIGHT , a three-year-old sorrel mare , is one of the finest around in her class . She was a top filly last year and has improved for 1969 with a fine canter . She is owned by H . B . Hauk . Mr . and Mrs . Douglas Branch are proud of their black three-year-old mare by MIDNIGHT SUN . She ’ s coming on strong for 1969 . J . L . Huston has a four-year-old sorrel stallion by MERRY GO BOY that has great promise .
Heading the list of age horses is , of course , the 1968 Reserve World Champion Junior Horse , SUN ’ S CHAP ARRAL . owned by Roy Carr . Mr . and Mrs . Carr also own JET ’ S RHYTHM , a fine black stud that can hit a big lick . DEACON JONES is a bay gelding that can get things done , and owner H . B . Hauk is pleased with him . G . B . Nelson is pleased with the progress of SUN ’ S SHADOWETTE , a pretty three-year-old filly by MIDNIGHT SUN . Mr . and Mrs . Bob Burgan of
Lincolnton , N . C . have a three-year-old golden sorrel stud named SUN ’ S SUNDAE , and Mr . and Mrs . Charles Overstreet of Roanoke , Va ., have their three-yearold stud by SUN ’ S ROCKET in training . Another age stud in training is a sorrel owned by Clifton Webb of Leatherwood , Ky . One young horse that everyone is watching is a TRIPLE THREAT three-year-old owned by J . B . Sherrill of Gastonia , N . C .
Another top horse in the barn is MR . MASTER PIECE T ., owned by the Terry Brothers of Bulls Gap , Tennessee . This horse will be shown in amateur competition and John T . may show him some also . With these and about fifteen other horses to work , John T . Carter has his hands full . If you ’ re ever up that way , drop in to see them for yourself .
FORRESTER ’ S STABLES
Danny Forrester , trainer for the Leon Forrester ’ s Walking Horse Stable in Martin , Tennessee , is busy preparing for the 1969 show season . Danny is presently working thirty horses , specializing in juvenile and amateur horses . Danny has introduced a new juvenile rider every year , and each year they have brought home some of the Celebration colors .
This year will be no exception . Johnny McAdams
will be presenting his Walking Pony , DELIGHT ’ S MOLLY McA ., and she may very well be the best yet .
Clara Forrester , Cyndy Rawls , and Nancy Burchum are all ready to receive the honors of the 1969 season .
MIDNIGHT MISCHIEF W ., owned by Austin Willett of Freehold , New Jersey , just could be the dark horse of the junior division with Danny in the saddle . Watch for these horses and many others from this stable during the coming season .
RICHARD PATE STABLES
During all the hubbub in West Tennessee last month , Dick Pate stayed home and tended to business . The results , we understand , have been fruitful . Dick is working a barn full at his stable over in Covington , and has a good supply of just about everything . The big news was the sale of EBONY ’ S OLD CHARTER , 1968 Reserve Champion Two-Year-Old . He was purchased by the well-known team of Beech & Hale , who reportedly already have some feelers on a re-sale . Dick says the fancy deep sorrel stallion has improved with age and has taken his canter in fine form .
Another sale at the Pate Stables was COPY ’ S STAR , a fine three-year-old black filly that Dick showed well last year . We hear that she brought a top four-figure price and that her new owner is mighty pleased with his purchase . We will surely hear more about this filly later on .
Two-year-olds are plentiful but several head the list as being tops in the Pate barn this year . We did not get a report on all of them but have heard some mighty encouraging words about two in particular . One , a black filly by CARBON COPY , is coming on well . Her name is BARBARELLA , and all of you who saw the movie by the same name will want to see her " do her thing .” Another top colt , that we have watched since he was a weanling , is a big bay named GO BOY ’ S FURY . He was raised by D . T . Clippinger of
