WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Each year it is interesting to take
a look at the World Champions of the
previous year and to see where they
are now. On occasion, within the per
iod of one short year, some of our
World Champions have fallen by the
wayside or have been retired. Others
are still in competition and improv
ing steadily with age. Of particular
interest is the history of our young
Champions in the past. Very few of
them ever make it all the way to the
top. The rigors of competition take
their toll in our business just as they
do in professional athletics, and a lot
of our potentially great young per
formers never make it to the "big
time.” We will go back one year
and try to project our current World
Champions into the scene this year
as another Celebration approaches.
ACE’S SENSATION
1968 World Champion Junior Horse
After winning the Junior Stallion
Class and the Junior Stake, this fine
black stallion came back to show a
third time in one week to tie high in
the Grand Championship Stake in
1968. This is the feat that earned
him the title of "Super Horse,” which
has been his banner for 1969. He
was sold twice during the Celebra
tion last year: Dr. C. L. Sexton of
Florence, South Carolina purchased
him from Beech & Hale on Saturday
morning of the big stake and R. Ran
dall Rollins of Atlanta, Georgia pur
chased him later in the day. He has
been shown five times since last year
and is considered a solid contender
for the 1969 Grand Championship.
GO BOY’S ROYAL HEIR
1968 World Grand Champion
A popular contender that "knocked
on the door” of the World title for
several years, GO BOY’S ROYAL
HEIR achieved the pinnacle last year
with trainer Donald Paschal in the
saddle. Since his victory he has been
standing at stud at the Paschal Sta
bles in Woodbury, Tennessee and is
reported to be a popular breeding
horse. ROYAL HEIR was officially
retired at Montgomery in November
of 1968. He has been exhibited con
sistently this year and continues to
thrill the crowds with his beauty and
natural ability. He remains the prop
erty of Dr. and Mrs. Claude Sexton
of Florence, S. C., and should be
come even more popular as a stud
GUNSMOKE’S FIREBALL
1968 World Champion Two-Year-Old
This was one of the truest "big
lick” two-year-olds to come into the
Celebration in quite a while. Trainer
Ronnie Spears did an excellent job
last year of building the big bay up
to a peak for the 1968 Celebration
and won the championship handily.
Since then he has been shown spar
ingly, only two or three times, and
is undefeated. Reports are that he is
improving with age, has a nice can
ter, and should be a solid contender
again this year in Three-Year-Old
competition. He is still owned by Mr.
and Mrs. Paul Thompson and Mr.
and Mrs. Jimmy McDonald of Ral
eigh, Mississippi. He moved with his
trainer to East Tennessee when Mr.
Spears made a change in his location.
GO BOY’S BLACK ROOSTER
'68 World Champion Three-Year-Old
After his win at the Celebration
last year, BLACK ROOSTER won
a handy victory at the Southern
Championship in Montgomery with
trainer Carlton Pitts turning in one
of the finest performances of his
young career. In the latter part of
1968, BLACK ROOSTER was mov
ed to Sam Paschal’s stable in Mur
freesboro, Tennessee, reportedly to
be sold. The last word we received
from his owner, Captain E. A. Self
of Mobile, he had not changed hands.
He wras not shown until late in the
season and all indications are that
"Mr. Sam” has been putting in more
time-in-the-saddle than most people
realized. He has won two blues in two
times out and the word is that he is
"better than ever.” He will beshown
by Sam at the Celebration.
