HEART OF DIXIE STABLES — Dr . N . S . Luton , owner of this thriving Alabama Walking Horse stable , is pictured w ' ith “ Big Bruce ” Wright , number one supporter of the operation and Trainer Billy Cantrell .
CYCLONE carrying the mail in the stud classes and PRINCES GO BOY going in gelding classes . Billy also has a fine three year old mare named SUE ’ S ROYAL LADY B belonging to Mrs . Luton , that is doing well . This mare is by MIDNIGHT IKE out of a MAY ALLEN mare and shows great promise .
One of the big items of discussion is a colt appropriately named “ COLT 45 .” He is a black stud by MIDNIGHT SUN out of a STROLLING SUE marean d “ Big Bruce ” Wright says everyone feels that he is a top colt in every respect . Other two year olds include a black stud by GO BOY ’ S DEVIL and a real nice blue roan EBONY MAS TERPIECE filly that is making fine progress .
When the gate opens and the 1967 season gets underway we are sure to hear more about Billy Cantrell and the Heart of Dixie Stables . Dr . Luton and other horse enthusiasts in the area are fortunate to have such a promotion minded backer as Big Bruce . . . “ blow whistle blow ”!!
Waggoner Stables
One of the most well respected Walking Horse enthusiasts in upper East Tennessee is “ Pop ” Waggoner of Kingsport . “ Pop ” has an interest in the Robinwood Farms but also has his own fine stable at another farm . He has Basil Morrison working a few horses for him and several are certainly worthy of mention . He has a real “ sho-nuff ” strawberry roan two-year-old that is a “ big lick ” kind of a natural colt . His name is SHADOW ’ S FOLLY and he could shake a few people up . We also saw a fine black two-year-old that is by GO BOY ’ S EASTER SON . He is a fine colt that could make a top prospect . Drop by to see Mr . Waggoner whenever you are in Kingsport .
Silo Hill Stable
South Carolina has a state full of fine Tennessee Walking Horses and some of the best in this area can be found at the Silo Hill Stables in Newberry , South Carolina . The stable is owned by Guy Whitener , Jr ., and the head trainer is Bill Sledge .
Construction is still going on but the facilities for the actual walking of horses are already complete . Bill is working about twenty head of horses including five good looking two-year-olds .
Headlining the stable this year is INVASION PER SUASION . 1 his big bold four-year-old has the three solid gaits , cocky looks , and beautiful conformation that are characteristic of a world champion . He made his first show of the year in Gainesville , Florida , and beat everyone
16 in capturing the blue ribbon . Bill is planning a series of shows for this top contender but his plans are not complete at this time . MERRY BOY ’ S SECRET is a top aged horse who
has been a consistent winner down through the years SECRET has plenty of potential and a planned program of training and showing should have him in top form by the time of the big show . SECRET has also been bred to some select mares and his future as a sire looks promising
indeed . Stuart Whitener is a pretty 16-year-old lass who is
working hard on becoming a prime contender in amateur classes . Guy bought her a top six-year-old mare , GO BOY ’ S DEBBIE GIRL , and she is doing a fine job already . Stuart is one of the top students in the country . In a recent nationwide achievement test , this fine student scored in the top 10 % of the students in the country . This was a duplication for this little lady as she also captured this award the year before . Congratulations to Stuart for her blue ribbon performance in the classroom .
Leslie is the youngest of the Whitener ’ s two girls and she is something to see . Her horse is named RANDY and you would have to see him to believe it . Leslie may show a Walking Horse in leadline classes later this year , but plans for this little horsewoman arc incomplete as of now .
Guy plans to show later on this year also but is unsure as to who his horse will be . Guy is a “ veteran ” as he was the South Carolina reserve junior champion on BILLY ’ S HI FIVE in his first year of showing . That ’ s quite a start
and it will be hard to beat .
Bill Sledge has an 18-year-old son who is already winning blue ribbons in hot competition . Bill won the juvenile class and the juvenile stake in Gainesville , Florida , earlier this year and is taking on all comers with BILLY ’ S HI FIVE .
The barn itself is 204 feet long with a 24-foot-wide hall for working horses . It contains 24 spacious stalls and a big ring outside serves a very useful purpose . This working ring is 120 feet wide and 250 feet long . The stable and other facilities are located on 35 acres of prime land . Needless to say , there is plenty of room for expansion .
Richard Pate Stables
We are happy to announce the opening of the new Richard Pate Stables in Covington , Tennessee . Due to the limited amount of available stalls at their stables in Rossville , Tenn ., Dickie and Russell decided to dissolve their partnership , and Dickie has established his own barn at the location of the D . D . Dickey barn in Covington . Dickie has a barn full of horses , including several top twoyear-olds for this season . Mr . Charlie Graves of Memphis has an outstanding black stud colt that is all ready for the gates to open . Sired by MACK K ’ s REFLECTION , this colt can do a head-shaking running walk and then drop back and perform a flat walk with plenty of head motion .
Dickie also has under saddle the first colt sired by his top stud , HAWK ’ S MEMORY . This fine black stud colt is owned by the Barnie Bramlett ’ s of Oxford , Miss ., and Dickie . Mr . D . D . Dickey has a fine two-year-old black HANDSHAKER filly that is really going to be a top mare . Dickie is busy getting GO BOY ’ S NIGHT PROWLER ready for the up and coming season . This five-year-old stud was shown successfully by Dickie last year in junior and open classes and was recently crowned the Mid-South Walking Horse Champion . This season he will enter the
amateur ranks as an amateur mount for owner Janie Bramlctt . Dickie invites everyone to drop in to sec him
and his top stock at their new location .
