Bits & Spurs E. L. BURGESS of Sherrill, Arkan sas has a good string of show horses this season. Highlighting the barn is a three-year-old sorrel stallion with a lot of promise. Bama Go Girl is a three-year-old mare by Merry Go Boy. Go Girl has already scored one blue— the Junior class in Fort Worth. Under trainer RAY BENNETT’S skillful hands, the two-year-old granddaughter of Silver Sultan is making terrific progress. Ray is working several other prospective two-year-olds, including some by Perfection, Jet Parade, and Go Boy’s Shadow. Mr. Burgess should have a nice crop of colts this summer, as he has five mares bred to Go Boy, and two to Midnight Mack K. One of them is an old Midnight Sun mare with seventeen foundation sires in her pedigree. JOHN STROUD is working an out standing two-year-old black filly by my horse, Shadow’s Replica. Her owners have already turned down quite a lot of money for her. This filly is fine as a deer, and has speed and stride to spare. By Sharon Terry Box 1178 Slate College, Miss. Mother and Dad recently made a trip to JOE WEBB’s bam in Searcy, Arkansas. Joe has a barn full of good two-year-olds, including the Great Contender by Perfection and out of a Midnight Sun mare. This colt, own ed by Dr. RODGERS, has a tremen dous lick with lots of speed. Another Perfection two-year-old is Big Red, owned by JERRY COLE. Big Red is a big handsome colt who looks every inch a champion. A top two- year-old mare is a sorrel filly owned by Mrs. CEBURN LEE. Joe is work ing a sharp-looking black three-year- old stallion, Merry Boy’s Big Booger, for Mr. and Mrs. RONNY GABLE of Osceola, Arkansas. Joe’s pride and joy is a black two-year-old colt with a catchy name, The Entertainer. Own ed by RODGERS, BINNS, RANEY and WEBB, this colt has everything: looks, style, and motion. Mother and Dad saw Carbon Copy at the same age, and they say that this colt is a better two-year-old than Copy was. This may be hard to believe, but it’s true. He should be quite a horse. June, 1965 News from Brownsville, Tennessee way says that JIMMY WADDELL is sitting on ready for the 1965 show season. Jimmy has his sensational three-year-old mare, Perfection’s Shadow S., in top form for Mr. PAR NELL. Go Boy’s Black Jack looks better than ever. Lady Godiva is right and ready for Mrs. PARNELL in all of the Ladies’ Classes. PORTER NORMAN has just bought a top stake horse by JetPar- ade from BUD DUNN. . .DOUG WOLA VER’s three-year-old mare is looking mighty fine. . .Handshaker’s colts are working good. . .JIMMY HOLLOWAY has a chestnut stallion stake horse called Royal Flush for CHARLIE MADDOX. . .and JAMES K. TAYLOR is taking one blue right after another on Moonglow Jr. MARVIN WILSON and my geld ing, Sun’s Dark Demon, won the Stallion and Gelding Class at 'Gun ters ville, Alabama. GRAHAM B RAM LETT of Clarksdale has a good mare called Moon Maid with Marvin. Dr. ANDERSON’S walking pony really looks good these days. Stormy Weather, Daddy’s roan stal lion, will be a hot contender in the Open and Amateur classes this sum mer. ------ That’s about all the news for this month. Exams are coming up and I’ve got to study! MICHIGAN WALKING HORSE NEWS The April meeting of the Walking Horse Club, Inc. met in Galesburg last month with a good turn-out of members, and a very interesting talk was given by DUANE FANK- HAUSER of Few Acres Stables, Ot sego. Mr. Fankhauser’s talk was on the preparation and grooming of the horse for show. The Fankhausers have a very nice new stable with a wonderful indoor working area and they have done a good job training Mrs. FRANCES MILLER’S pleasure horse, Merry Music Maker, for show ing this season. Frances got second place with him at the Kal-Val show recently. There are several new horses in the area this season. A newcomer to the Michigan Walking Horse circuit is CARL HOBBS of Benton Harbor. He has recently purchased from the south a fine young gelding called Go Boy’s Angel H. He did very well at his first show at Kal-Val, taking the three-year-old class and third in the Amateur class. Dr. and Mrs. J. R. JONES ofWalk- away Farms, Manchester are show ing two new geldings. GENE’S is Walkaway’s Shadow, a beautiful bay, and BOB’s is a gorgeous dark chest nut Mack K colt, called Mack K’s Rambler. Mr. and Mrs. STERLING CURTIS of Swartz Creek both have new mounts to show this season. Have not had the opportunity yet to see them, but believe they are both by Midnight Sun, and are supposed to be very good. Another newcomer, at least to the Kal-Val show, was a beautiful black mare called Perfection’s Velvet owned by MARVIN RICHARDS of Battle Creek. JOYCE showed her in the Pleasure class for her father. Marvin’s son, STANLEY, showed Sun’s Easter Parade in the three- year-old class and got third. Both are very nice horses. PAIGE and MARY EMMONS can be very proud of their young daugh ter, PAULA. She is the rider of Paige’s good gelding Dixie Defender. (Continued on page 20) 17
