Including the two surviving members of the original committee , the Celebration Directorate and Executive Committee now consists of : W . C . Tune , Jr ., president ; William L . Parker , vice-president ; Phil J . Scudder , secretary-treasurer ; Evan Lloyd Adamson , Henry C . Tilford , Jr ., Robert M . Thomas and Henry J . Thompson , directors .
For many years Sam Gibbons of Athens , Ala . has served as show manager and Blue Ribbon Yearbook editor and Emmet Guy of Jackson , Miss , has served as announcer . Jimmy Richardson of Shelbyville has long been Celebration Organist and has won nationwide fame in that capacity .
In 1962 the Celebration plans call for seven nights of show ' s — from Sunday , Aug . 26 through Sept . 1 . There are 57 classes with prize money approximately $ 20,000 . The National Futurity sponsored by the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders ’ and Exhibitors ’ Association of America , Inc ., is scheduled Saturday night , Aug . 25 , 1962 , at the Celebration Grounds at 7:30 o ’ clock with admission free .
Grand Champions of the World■ — 1939-1962
Here are the Grand Champions of the World Tennessee Walking Horses crowned during the first 24 years of Celebration History :
1939 — Strolling Jim , a 3-year-old gelding ridden by Floyd Carothers for Col . C . H . Bacon of Loudon , Tenn . One judge rode both Jim and another horse before making up his mind .
1940 and 1941 — -Haynes Peacock , a 12-year-old gelding in 1940 ridden by his owner , Col . Jack L . Haynes of Maury County , Tenn . for both championships . Col . Haynes was the only amateur rider to w ' in the championship in the first 22 Celebrations .
1942 — Melody Maid , a 5-year-old mare ridden by Floyd Carothers for Mr . and Mrs . Frank D . Rambo of Oakwood Stables , Fayetteville , Tenn .
1943 — Black Angel , a 6-year-old mare ridden by Winston Wiser for Mrs . and Mrs . R . F . Ellis of Orrville , Ala . This year found the Celebration forced to postpone two night shows due to weather , and to conclude the show on Sunday afternoon . Despite all conditions the Celebration netted $ 3.50 above all expenses .
1944 — City Girl , a 6-year-old mare ridden by Urban Small for M . J . Myer of Baton Rouge , La ., who had bought the mare in April , 1944 , from Mr . and Mrs . Frank Rambo . City Girl finished fourth in the mare class preliminary so Mr . Myer left by train for Baton Rouge on Friday night , thinking his horse had no chance for the championship . Urban Small ’ s great ride w ' on the title with the ownerabsent — this being the only such case up to this time of writing .
1945 — 46 — Midnight Sun , 5-year-old stallion ridden to both championships by Fred Walker for Harlinsdale Farm , Franklin , Tenn . This stallion and his sons had sired a total
