Fashion during the 1930's revolved around accessories. The perfect accessory could improve an entire look. Plus, it was a lot less expensive to buy an accessory than to purchase an entirely new outfit. Since women spent less money on clothes than they did in the 1920's, accessories were much more glamorous. Women who could afford it wore jewels, feathers, and furs. Women loved to experiment with different types of hats. Evening gowns were accessorized with belts. Wealthier women would add to their daytime and evening outfits with fur and fur trims. Women began to wear more practical shoes but evening shoes had touches of gold and silver to them.
The Snood
The snood was made popular by fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli in 1935. It looked almost like a hairnet but it only covered hair at the back of the head. It was either knitted or crocheted. It helped women working in factories to keep their hair away and women who were having bad hair days.
1930's Fashion Accessories
The Fez and Tricorn
A fez is a brimless hat that was shaped like a cylinder and had a tassel on top. They were usually made of red felt and worn by men. However, women wore them as a unique accessory to add charm to their more plain outfits.
The tricorn was a three-corner hat that was also accessorized by women.
Fur
Very few women were lucky enough to accessorize with fur. Flatter fur was worn during the day and longer hair was worn during the evening. Women who could afford it wore fur outerwear. Fur coats and capes used furs such sable, mink, chinchilla, and white fox. Silver fox and black monkey were the most popular types of fur.
