Makeup during this era was a luxury at its finest, as the Great Depression depleted most families of any remaining money, but that didn’t stop makeup from further expanding. Alike the popular hairstyle fad of the blonde bombshell, early Hollywood stars had a big influence on makeup trends of this decade. Using refined feminine features, the makeup of the 1930’s was completely opposite to the wild and adventurous makeup of the 1920’s. Thin pencil eyebrows were on point and claimed popularity amongst Hollywood ladies, as they created the illusion of a more rounded face. This trend was so popular, some women had their natural eyebrows plucked at the salon in
order to fully achieve the effect! Evolving from the dark and alluring eyeshadows of the 1920’s, the eye makeup for this decade revolved around brightly colored and shimmering eyeshadows of blue, green, and purple tones, especially since only those of pure wealth were able to afford them. Jean Harlow exemplified this look during red carpets, as the black & white televisions didn’t quite capture the magic of a sultry purple eye look. Though these two trends were huge, the most important part of a makeup look was the lipstick! Lip colors such as rouge, light pinks, and maroons dominated over this era and made the women feel and look more businesslike and polished.
