1540 BARBARO ON BLUE PAPER 1540 BARBARO ON BLUE PAPER | Page 14
All these misprints, present in both Aldine copies, are the consequence of printing
difficulties using blue paper that, due its thickness, required a different procedure.
Although the two copies were printed simultaneously, we suggest that blue paper was
printed at first for the following reasons:
A3v: word “d’anni” last line. On blue paper copy word “d’anni” is perfectly printed
while on white paper copy lower section of the word is not inked;
A4r: word “panni” first line. On blue paper copy dot of letter “i” is correctly printed
while on white paper copy dot is impressed but not inked;
These inking defects highlighted on the JRL copy imply that author’s copy was
printed as last and are caused by insufficient inking on a second press attempt.
