Kellogg Opera House bult in 1900 located on Cedar Street
The Stone Mill was a combination corn
and sawmill that was operated by steam engine. During the height of its operation in
the 1880's, the saw mill ran day and night
shipping out by rail walnut and oak. By the
late 1890's however, the mill was abandoned and was essentially in ruins. But in 1900,
George M. Kellogg built an "Opera House" on
the solid two foot foundations of the old mill.
The Kellogg Opera House was the center of
the cultural activities of Pleasant Hill until moving pictures became more appealing to the people. By 1917, the opera house was not used as
an entertainment center.
However, when the North Methodist
Church burned, the opera house was
bought to replace it. Until 1960, the old
Kellogg Opera House was the site of the
Pleasant Hill Methodist Church. When
they abandoned the building, it was sold in
1968 to become the Hope Baptist Church.
In 2009 it became the Kellogg Baptist
Church. In March of 2013, renovations
began and it is now Grace and Truth Baptist Church.
A woolen mill was a successful operation which was built in 1872. By 1880, the
mill manufactured yarns and jeans and
used over 100,000 pounds of wool each
year. When the woolen mill later closed, the
machinery was removed and the large open

Hill's first indoor basketball court before it

The first bank was opened by Leonard,
Dunbaugh & Company in 1866 and
Colonel Herder's brewery was in operation
in Pleasant Hill in the 1860's and 1870's.
The brewer used a cave just off of Walnut
Street for storage, but it was later torn out
in 1903to make way for the Rock Island
Railway.
The local brick yards also flourished in
the 1880's but were abandoned in 1903
when Rock Island Railway came through.
The Kellogg greenhouses were built in
1880 and for many years were considered
the largest such establishment west of the
Mississippi.
The owners became famous for hybridizing a large and perfect red rose
whose sturdy stems were as much as three
feet in length.
The chicken hatchery industry also was
a prominent part of Pleasant Hill's past. In
1925, Eden Booth came from the WindsorClinton area and headed the Colonial Poultry Company. Millions of laying chickens
and baby chicks were shipped out of Pleasant Hill to all parts of the world.
These old businesses are gone now, but
others have taken their places and Pleasant

Hill is on the verge of becoming an even
more vibrant and innovative community.
Pleasant Hill often saw its sons and
daughters go to war to help preserve our
country's freedom. In particular, during the
20th century, many heeded the call, and
some did not return home. Nine were lost
during World War 1, twenty never saw
home again because of World War 11, three
were killed in Korea, and one local resident
lost his life during the Vietnam War.
Many more were wounded or were
POWs. All of Pleasant Hill suffered because of their losses. Without a doubt, this
community produced many real heroes
during these wars.
Much of our local history is documented and preserved in the Pleasant
Hill Museum, located downtown on
Wyoming Street. Visitors to the museum
can find extensive genealogical information to help them trace their family's history. Archives of old photographs bring
to life the people and places who have
contributed to the character and culture
of the community.
It is obvious that the citizens of Pleasant Hill are very proud of their city's remarkable past, and certainly anticipate
an exciting and even more remarkable
future.
