Bro . Canice , Director , SJI from April 1947 to September 1947 left St . Joseph ' s and returned to Ireland .
Brother Anthony became the next Director of St . Joseph ' s Institution on 16th September 1947 . In a simple ceremony held on 17th September 1947 , the new Director said , " This is the first ocassion in the annals of St . Joseph ' s Institution on which a young missionary has been placed at the helm of the premier school of the Christian Brothers in Malaya ". As the Director of St . Joseph ' s Institution , Brother Anthony appealed to pupils and their parents to contribute towards the establishment of an up-to-date Science Laboratory and also the reconditioning of the school field . Work on the former project began in November 1947 and was completed in January 1949 . The school field was re-turfed , and at the same time fences were put up along Queen Street and Waterloo Street . In characteristics of St . Joseph ' s - " a dignity , loyalty and happy school spirit " - did not deteriorate to any marked degree . These characteristics survived even during the blackest day of the Japanese Occupation because they have been cultivated and developed with care over a period of nearly a century since its foundation . The enrolment in 1946 was 1,420 .

pore , Sir Franklin Gimson visited St . Joseph ' s . He was astounded by the amazing progress made by the school . In his diary , he wrote the following , ", . . I was much impressed by the steps achieved in the return to normal . This return is due to the enthusiasm of the pupils as well as the zeal of the teachers ... " On 1st April 1947 , Brother Canice , became Director of St . Joseph ' s , succeeding Brother D . Joseph who left by air for a holiday in Ireland .
