classroom . At the same time , students were making further inroads into the Brothers ' Quarters and a portion of the dormitory had to be converted into another classroom . Various plans to expand St . Joseph ' s were considered ; but , for one reason or another , were not found to be practical . Thus , it was in early 1929 that a plan was mooted by the Brothers to build another school in the Katong area . It was felt that , with the growing importance of Katong as a residential area , the new school would be able to serve the educational needs of the residents of Katong . At the same time , the problem of over-crowding in St . Joseph ' s would be solved by transferring the Boarding Department to the new school in Katong . Thus , the Brothers '
BungalOW in Katong was demolished on 13th July 1929 . An imposing new school , a big chapel and a
new house for the Brothers and the Boarders would be completed within a year . This " new "
school , St . Patrick ' s , was eventually completed in December 1932 .
Another significant event which took place during Brother Stephen Edward ' s directorship was the visit of the Governor , Sir Cecil Clementi to St . Joseph ' s in 1931 . During his visit , the distinguished visitor was assured by the Brothers that no effort was spared ( by the Brothers ) to instil into the students " all those desirable and essential principles of religion , respect , obedience and loyalty to lawfully constituted authorities ". Sir Cecil Clementi was then conducted round the school after which he was taken to the new St . Patrick ' s School in Katong for an inspection of the buildi ngs under construction .
St . Josephs Institution was honoured by two other distinguished visitors during Brother Stehen ' s term of office . Firstly it was the visit of Brother Jumien Victor , Assistant Superior General who was in charge of districts in Indo-China . Another V . I . P . who visited the school was the Inspector of Schools , Mr . Cheeseman , a very sympathetic man and a great admirer of the Brothers .
