Fred Martens and Rene Eber had obtained the first three places in the award on 20th May 1905 . Fred Martens , however , was not a British Subject and thus was not eligible for the award . Rene Eber then took his place . Great credit for th is outstanding success was due to Brother Airmare . St . Joseph ' s obtained two more scholarships later - on through Claude de Silva in 1906 and the other through Stephen de Souza in 1910 .
The year
1905 was also one of severe trial for the Community with the deaths of two Brothers - Brothers Dorothee and Hibert who passed away on 15th and 21st October respectively . The deaths of these two Brothers who had contributed so much towards the progress of the school came as a severe shock to the Community .
At the Annual Distribution of Prizes , the Governor , Sir John Anderson , spoke in glowing terms of the School and the work done by the Brothers . He also expressed his sympathy in the recant loss to the Community on the deaths of
Brother Dorothee and Brother Hibert . On the
18th April 1906 , the Governor , Sir John Anderson signed the title deeds transferring St . Joseph ' s Institution from the Mission to the Brothers , some 18 months after the date of application .
The deeds was received by the Director , Brother Michael the following day .
On the 9th June
1906 , for the first time in the history of St . Joseph ' s Institution , Brother Imier de Jesus , then Visitor General , arrived in Singapore from Saigon and remained here for eight days . He was more than pleased with the work of the Brothers . He promised to send help to alleviate the work of the Brothers , and if possible , to establish a Novitiate for the district . In conjunction with the visit of the Visitor General , the Annual Sports was held on his arrival . He was very pleased with what he saw , particularly the work and support the Sports . of the old boys at
The Most Honourable Bro . Imier de Jesus , Superior General of the Christian Brothers ' Schools ( 1913 - 1923 ) ; visited St . Joseph ' s Institution on 9th June , 1906 .
