Heather Williams( V, P, In) Antibiotics vs. Bacterial Biofilms: A Natural Resistance Mechanism in Biofilms are aggregations of microorganisms embedded in an extracellular matrix that form on living and nonliving surfaces. They provide protection for microbes through varied mechanisms, many of which are not well-studied. Protection against antibiotics is one example, making the study of biofilms increasingly important, as antibiotic resistance is a growing global health threat. This study examined the effect of three antibiotics with differing action mechanisms upon three bacterial species – Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus and Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Findings differed depending upon species and antibiotic; in some instances, a specific antibiotic induced biofilm production, while in others it was inhibited.
